The Community College is an alternative system of education that aims at the empowerment of the disadvantaged and the underprivileged – the urban/rural/tribal poor and women through appropriate skill-development leading to gainful employment in collaboration with the local industry and community. This system also helps to achieve skills for employment and self-employment for the above-said sections of the people in the society.
St. Vincent Pallotti Community College, functioning under the aegis of Pallottine Social Welfare Centre, M. Kollapatty, Salem, Tamil Nadu, was accredited the status of an Associate Community College of Indian Centre for Research and Development of Community Education (ICRDCE), Chennai, Tamil Nadu, a Coordinating and Facilitating Agency for Community Colleges in India, on July 4, 2019. This official accreditation by ICRDCE qualifies St. Vincent Pallotti Community College to join the Schemes of National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), an Agency for Community Education of the Government of India, which will give recognition to all the courses conducted at St. Vincent Pallotti Community College. St. Vincent Pallotti Community College offers Tailoring, Beautician and Embroidery Cloth Designing courses. They are five-month-long regular courses, at the end of which students take exams conducted by NSDC, under the supervision of ICRDCE. Successful students are awarded NSDC Certificates, recognized by the Government of India. These Certificates can be used to apply for small loans from banks to start a small business or to obtain jobs in other industrial sectors. The first batch of students started the programme in August 2019 and completed in December 2019. The second batch, consisted of 90 women from 10 neighboring villages began the program on February 10, 2020. However, unfortunately due to the spread of corona virus the classes were suspended. The end of the corona virus crisis has led to the revival of the programmes at St. Vincent Pallotti Community College. The latest batch of 17 Tailoring students and 12 Beautician students, who appeared for NSDC exams and passed with “A” grade, were awarded NSDC, Government of India approved, Certificates on December 02, 2023 during the occasion of Christmas celebration. The College management is confident that these Certificates would enable them to get job in the various government and non-governmental sectors. The Institute also help the needy successful students to start their own tailoringcentres and beauty parlours, as we strongly believe that economic empowerment plays a significant role for women empowerment in the society. The Community College project at Pallottine Social Welfare Centre is a great step towards empowering women, especially rural women by offering skill-based and job-oriented education.
